Crossovers are coming. Auto manufacturers are moving old big and bulky SUVs over to new-style SUVs. Termed "crossovers", this is an attempt to produce SUVs that weigh less, deliver better fuel-economy, and are less truck-like ones.
The changeover will cost both consumers and automakers as automakers will have to scrap their profitable truck engineering for more cost-constrained car mechanicals. This can cost consumers up to $5,000 a vehicle.
15 years ago, SUVs ruled the road. Now the Ford Explorer, possible the most popular SUV of that era is headed to the scrap yard. People got tired of the lack of fuel economy and rollover issues .
